огда же настало утро, все первосвященники и старейшины собрались и решили предать Иисуса смерти. Они связали Его и отвели к Понтию Пилату, римскому правителю в Иудее. Тогда Иуда, предавший Иисуса, увидев, что Он осужден, и раскаявшись, возвратил тридцать сребреников первосвященникам и старейшинам, говоря: «Согрешил я, предав кровь невинную». И, бросив сребреники в храме, он пошел и удавился.

Иудеи, которые привели Иисуса, не вошли в преторию, дворец язычника Пилата, чтобы не оскверниться. Пилат сам вышел к ним и сказал: «В чем вы обвиняете Этого Человека?» Они сказали ему в ответ: «Если бы Он не был злодеем, мы не предали бы Его тебе». И начали обвинять Его, говоря: «Мы находим, что Он сеет смуту в нашем народе и запрещает платить подать императору, называя Себя Христом Царем».

Тогда Пилат опять вошел в преторию и, призвав Иисуса, сказал Ему: «Ты Царь иудейский?» Иисус отвечал: «Царство Мое не от мира сего. Если бы от мира сего было Царство Мое, то служители Мои постояли бы за Меня». Пилат сказал Ему: «Итак, Ты Царь?» Иисус отвечал: «Я на то родился и на то пришел в мир, чтобы свидетельствовать об истине. Всякий, кто от истины, слышит голос Мой». Пилат спросил Его: «Что есть истина?» Но Иисус более ничего не отвечал ему.

Узнав, что Иисус из Галилеи, где правил царь Ирод, Пилат послал Его к Ироду, который в те дни был в Иерусалиме. Ирод задавал Иисусу множество вопросов, но Он ничего не отвечал ему. Первосвященники же и законоучители возводили на Него множество обвинений. Но Ирод со своими воинами, уничижив Его и посмеявшись над Ним, одел Его в царские одежды и отослал обратно к Пилату. И сделались в тот день Пилат и Ирод друзьями, ибо прежде были во вражде друг с другом.

Пилат же, созвав первосвященников, начальников и народ, сказал им: «Вы привели ко мне Этого Человека как возмущающего народ. Но я при вас рассмотрел и не нашел справедливым ни одно из ваших обвинений против Него». Пилат, следуя обычаям, собирался отпустить по случаю праздника одного узника. Он хотел освободить Иисуса, но толпа стала кричать: «Смерть Ему! Отпусти нам Варавву». Варавва же был посажен в темницу за произведенные в городе беспорядки и убийство.

Пилат снова возвысил голос, желая отпустить Иисуса, но они кричали: «Распни, распни Его!» И оказался крик их сильнее, чем голос Пилата.

arly in the morning all the chief priests and the elders of the people came to the decision to put Jesus to death. They bound him, led him away and handed him over to Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea . When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders. "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

Since the Jews who had brought Jesus did not want to become unclean, they did not enter the courtyard of the Roman Pilate. So Pilate came out to them and asked, "What charges are you bringing against this man?" "If he were not a criminal," they replied, "we would not have handed him over to you." And they began to accuse him, saying, "We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king."

Pilate then went back inside the palace, summoned Jesus and asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my servants would fight to prevent my arrest by the Jews. But now my kingdom is from another place." "You are a king, then!" said Pilate. Jesus answered, "You are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me." "What is truth?" Pilate asked. But Jesus made no further reply.

When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction (that is, from Galilee), he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Herod plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. That day Herod and Pilate became friends-before this they had been enemies.

Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him."

Now it was the governor's custom at the Feast to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. With one voice the people cried out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!" (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. But they kept shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!" And in the end their shouts were stronger than the voice of Pilate.
