огда Мария была беременна, ей и Иосифу пришлось отправиться в далекий путь, потому что римский император Август повелел сделать перепись населения по всей империи. Каждому надо было пойти в город своих предков. Иосиф и Мария были из рода царя Давида, который правил Израилем за тысячу лет до рождения Иисуса.

Итак, Иосиф и Мария отправились в Вифлеем, город царя Давида. От Назарета до Вифлеема более ста километров. В то время не было ни поездов, ни автомобилей, и такое путешествие длилось несколько дней. Назарет расположен на севере Израиля, в Галилее, а Вифлеем – на юге, в Иудее. По пути из Галилеи в Иудею нужно было пройти через Самарию, к тому же Самария и Иудея – гористые местности.

Когда, наконец, Иосиф и Мария пришли в Вифлеем, мест в гостинице не оказалось. Марии же наступило время родить. «И родила Сына своего Первенца, и спеленала Его, и положила Его в ясли», – читаем в Евангелии. Это значит, что они разместились в загоне для скота, а Младенца положили в кормушку. По древнему преданию, этот хлев находился в пещере. В тех краях пастухи использовали такие пещеры в качестве загонов для своих овец.

hile Mary was pregnant, she and Joseph had to go on a long journey, because the Roman emperor Augustus decided that everyone in the whole empire should be registered. Everyone had to go to the town of their ancestors. Joseph and Mary both belonged to the house and line of David, who was king of Israel a thousand years before Jesus was born.

So Joseph and Mary went to Bethlehem, the town of King David. It is more than 100 kilometres from Nazareth to Bethlehem . In those days there were no trains and no cars, and the journey took several days. Nazareth lies in northern Israel, in Galilee, and Bethlehem in the south, in Judea . And on their way from Galilee to Judea they had to travel through the mountainous area of Samaria .

When Joseph and Mary finally arrived in Bethlehem , all the hotels were full. And then the time came for her to give birth. We read in the Gospel that she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger. This means that they had to stay in a stable. Tradition says that the stable was in a cave. In that area shepherds still use stables like that to gather their sheep.
